About this audiobook
In a town on the Black Sea coast, Ivan Laevsky feels trapped by his relationship with Nadezhda Fyodorovna and by a life he has come to despise. His complaints provoke very different responses from the people around him. The doctor Samoylenko hopes to help, while the zoologist von Koren interprets Laevsky's behaviour with a severity that turns judgement into hostility.
Anton Chekhov brings incompatible explanations of human conduct into close contact. Personal weakness, disappointed affection and the wish to classify others become part of the same conflict. The characters can recognise flaws in one another without understanding the circumstances that make those flaws difficult to overcome.
The novella explores responsibility, compassion and the danger of treating a person as an example of a theory. Its tension grows from the widening distance between an opinion expressed in conversation and the consequences of acting upon it, leaving room to question the certainty with which people pronounce on another life.
