About this audiobook

Huckleberry Finn leaves the demands of settled life and travels along the Mississippi with Jim, an enslaved man seeking freedom. Their raft offers a fragile distance from the rules of the shore, but encounters with other people repeatedly bring those rules back into view. Huck must examine beliefs that his upbringing has taught him to accept. Mark Twain gives the journey a distinctive voice through Huck's observations and misunderstandings. Comic incidents exist beside coercion, deception and the realities of slavery. The narrator does not always recognise the implications of what he describes, allowing the reader to notice contradictions between accepted social values and the human consequences they produce. The novel explores friendship, conscience and the difficulty of making an independent moral judgement. Its river landscape connects adventure with criticism of the society through which the travellers pass, inviting attention to moments when direct concern for another person conflicts with what convention declares to be right.
