About this audiobook

Boris Raysky returns to a family estate carrying artistic ambitions and a fascination with other people's lives. The household brings him into contact with different ideas about duty, independence and love. His relatives Vera and Marfenka respond to the world in contrasting ways, while Tatyana Markovna gives established family values a forceful and complicated presence. Ivan Goncharov sets private relationships within arguments about changing social principles. Raysky's wish to understand and represent experience can conflict with the responsibility of participating in it. The lives around him resist being arranged into a satisfying picture, and the distance between aesthetic interest and genuine concern becomes increasingly important. The novel explores tradition, self-determination and the difficulty of judging another person's choices from outside. Its attention to a provincial household gives abstract disagreements a personal setting, allowing questions about freedom and moral authority to emerge through relationships whose emotional consequences cannot be settled by a single theory.
